Seed Germination

The seeds of the wild type of sunflower are only about 5 mm. long.   It was only through careful selection for the largest size seeds over hundreds of years that the cultivated sunflower was produced.

Sunflowers seeds are available at most garden nurseries and also most DIY shop. Mail order catalogues are good choice to find your sunflower seeds need too.

Carefully select your seeds by reading all of the information on the seed packs.  Pay attention to the height of the plants, and the time to bloom, and the type of flowers.

Always remember that sunflowers will not produce seed if you have only one plant--there must be at least two for cross-pollination.

Weeds can be a problem for sunflowers. Weed control is practiced for the first four to five weeks after seed emergence.
